About Group Calendar

Group Calendar allows guilds or groups of friends to share an in-game event calendar. The guild can post raid events and members can post events for dungeons they need to do quests for. Additionally, players can provide feedback to the event's sponsor saying that they will or won't be attending an event. Once installed Group Calendar replaces the minimap current time tooltip and sun & moon icon. This can be used to open the UI or it can be opened using the /calendar command. For instructions on how to set up Group Calendar for your guild or for your personal use, see the online user's manual

Troubleshooting Disappearing Events

The most common problem people experience with Group Calendar is having events and signups disappear. There are several possible causes of this and here are a few things to check to try to clear up the problem:

  • Have the creator of the missing events and members who can't see the events try running the most current version (even if it's beta) of Group Calendar available. I'm always finding and fixing various bugs which can interfere with event processing and propagation so there's a chance the problem has been addressed.
  • Have the event creator choose "Rebuild Database" in the Group Calendar About tab. This will push a fresh and repaired copy of his events onto the network, overwriting any damaged copy that may be out there.
  • If the event creator uses more than one computer or has a friend/spouse/roommate who logs into his account from their own computers, try disabling GC for the creator's characters on those other computers. Group Calendar is designed to allow roaming between computers, but it is difficult for it to handle and it may not work reliably, especially if there aren't enough other users in the guild or if there are other Group Calendar bugs interfering with the propagation of events.
  • If using more than one computer, it's best to always choose the "Accept" option when told there are newer versions of your event data on the network. If that turns out to be the wrong choice and causes events to disappear, there will be an automatic backup in the GC Backup tab which can be used to restore those events. If friends or family log into your account from their computers let them know to always choose "Accept" as well if that dialog comes up.
  • If you've ever copied the WTF folder from your account to another account folder (to replicate your UI layout on the other account) then this will mess up Group Calendar because it will think your characters are owned by both accounts. Go into the WTF/Accounts/<login id>/SavedVariables folder for the account you copied to and delete the GroupCalendar.lua file. When copying your settings folder to another account like that, always omit the GroupCalendar.lua settings file or delete it after the copy.

Getting settled into the house is still taking a lot of time, but here's the next build of Group Calendar 4.1. This one fixes one general bug which happened when someone was sending you an update but the update got corrupted somehow. Instead of simply re-requesting the update previous versions were throwing up an "internal error" message. This could account for at lease a few cases of people not getting up-to-date events/attendance data.

New in this version is a Russian translation courtesy of StingerSoft and an update to the French translation which makes transmute cooldown detection work again, courtesy of Ekhurr. Thanks both of you!

NOTE: It takes Curse a while (up to a few hours lately) to approve newly-uploaded files before you can download them. If the file isn't showing up and you'd like to get a copy immediately, you can download it from wobbleworks.com/groupcalendar right away.

    v4.1b5 Changes

    - BUGFIX: Updates which were corrupted when received are now correctly re-requested and no longer generate messages about an "internal error"
    - BUGFIX: Transmute cooldown detections work in French (thanks to Ekhurr)
    - FEATURE: Added Russian translation (thanks to Eritnull)

It seems that 4.1b4 and 4.0.x versions are not talking to eachother (like the 3.x and 4.x update at that time, although 4.1b3 didn't have this issue).
We have the same problems in the guild.

Made all the people switch back to v4.0.x and everyone is seeing the events again.
Until 4.1 is coming out of beta 4.0.x is mandatory in the guild till issues are resolved.

Anyways thanks for all the work you put into this, awsome organizer for raiding and sorts.

Hm, I don't know of and haven't seen any problems with 4.1b4 not talking to previous versions. Keep in mind that the incompatibility between 3.x and 4.x was intentional in order to resolve longstanding data communication problems from the previous version. All 4.x version now and in the future are intended to always communicate with each other.

I'll keep an eye out for potential causes, but I don't know of any right now.

Having events disappearing. Currently I am running GC on only one computer and really not even playing WoW on my office comp as I have been busy. I logged out normally from my alt (one that did not create the events) last night. I logged on a different alt this evening and got the Update popup, when I clicked Update, all my events disappeared. I saved the old and new GC.lua files and if you think they'll help I can send them to you. The problem of disappearing events definitely happens if the first character I log on to isn't the event creator, i.e., my warrior. At the same time though, it doesn't happen every time as I rarely logon my warrior first.

I'd love to see the before and after settings files. Send them to groupcalendarbugs at wobbleworks.com and I'll examine them to see if I can find anything revealing. Thanks!

By the way, have you ever copied your WTF settings for one account to another account (usually to replicate your UI and settings onto the second account)? I'm investigating this as a possible cause of GC data problems so it'd be nice to know.

Hi, can you let us know how to fix, or what is causing guild posted events to disappear? It is becoming a major inconvenience and is causing a lot of problems because rebuilding causes some people who signed up for raids to be removed from the list and lose there spot in the raid. This is urgent guild members are leaving because of this. Other than that thanks for the mod it is very useful.

I have nothing to tell you that's not covered in the first couple of pages of comments here -- just the same questions for you as for the other people experiencing it:

    - What version is the event creator using? If it's not the current beta of 4.1 have him try running that for a while and see if it clears up the problem.

    - Are any of the people seeing the events disappear running the current beta of 4.1? If not, have them try running it and see if it clears up the problem.

    - Does the event creator use more than one computer to log in? Using multiple computers is supposed to work, but it's difficult for Group Calendar to do because it has to ensure your data is spread well to other guild members to ensure that it makes it to your other computer when you log in there. When the event creator logs in from other computers his will get a warning dialog regarding newer events. He must always hit Accept at both machines or he will delete changes he made from the other computers.

    - Does the event creator have a spouse/friend/kid who logs into the creator's account? If they do then they need to know to always hit Accept when that warning dialog regarding newer events comes up and so must the creator. Even better though is to make sure Group Calendar is disabled for the creator's characters on the computers of friends and family.

If none of these solve the problem then I don't know what else to tell you. Maybe do some sleuthing and see if you can find anything that might give me a lead. Other than that I'll always be keeping an eye out for coding errors.

I am running v4.1b4 - Noone else gets on my account on any other computer. Yesterday I had the popup where it states that I have either experienced a problem because my computer shutdown/restarted (which it did not) or i have logged onto another computer and need to accept the changes or not if i think this was an error

I had not had a problem with my computer restarting nor has anyone else been on my account on another computer. We have seen this issue before and if i log onto my husbands account for example on my computer I turn GC off to avoid the confusion. But i know for a fact that my account was not used elsewhere (just changed my password the other day and hvnt given out the info to the family yet lol)

Our runs arent disappearing but some of the sign ups are. We have also seen where someone would signup and it would stay on pending changes.

My account is the adiminstrator using the Guild Data Channel minimum guild rank - everyone else is on automatic

Thanks for the work you put into this - Our guild loves this mod!!

PS - hope the move went smoothly and Gratz on the house!!

Have you ever copied the WTF folder from your account to your husband's? You might have done this to replicate your UI and addon data for his account for example.

Hello and thanks for a great add on. Our guild has recently noticed events not appearing for many guild members. Some see all events fine, some are missing for others and its the same events that are missing. We populated events for the entire week, and those that had some missing were missing the exact same ones. We tried resetting the .lua file and when I logged back in, I did see the missing events, but a few minutes later, it disappeared again. Any ideas?

  • July 20, 2008, 05:44PM (6 days, 6 hours ago)

Just did a /cal reset and the events showed. Then about an hour or so later, the same ones disappeared again.

  • July 20, 2008, 04:14PM (6 days, 7 hours ago)

The person who set up the events: Are they running at least v4.0.4? I know the only time we've seen that behaviour in our guild is when the person setting up the events is using one of the outdated, buggy versions.

  • July 20, 2008, 04:30PM (6 days, 7 hours ago)

    Yes, everyone running 4.04

  • July 20, 2008, 07:36PM (6 days, 4 hours ago)

Is the person who created the events using multiple computers or does s/he have a friend who logs into his account sometimes from their computer? If so, have him go to his main computer and do a "Rebuild Database" under the GC About tab and see if that clears up the problem. It sounds like there are multiple versions of his/her events on the network and it isn't getting resolved correctly.

4.1b4 is a very stable version as well at this point and fixes some other bugs related to using multiple computers. You may want to consider upgrading to that to see if the fixes it contains help clear up the problem as well.

  • July 20, 2008, 09:59PM (6 days, 2 hours ago)

I am on 41b4, I'll see if the person that is doing the events can update theirs.

  • July 22, 2008, 11:41AM (4 days, 12 hours ago)

Also having the same problem, i'm in charge of organising our guilds raids but not everbody is seeing all the events i put up. In addition i get messages saying that somebody has signed up for a raid and it is awaiting confirmation from me to approve them, when i goto that event they do not appear on the list.

The rest of the guild and I are using the latest version and i only use one computer for playing.

Edit: I first noticed this problem wheni got a message "you are not in guild" as exiting the game. After reseting things today i've agin got this message as i've exited. Is this related to the problem?

  • July 22, 2008, 10:27PM (4 days, 1 hour ago)

It shouldn't be related but that's in interesting point. The "You are not in a guild" message happens because during logout there's a period where the WoW client apparently drops your guild status right before it actually logs you out. I wonder if that's causing Group Calendar to think you've left your guild and triggers its housekeeping tasks of cleaning out your old guild events? It shouldn't cause events you've created to go away, but it could explain events from other guild members going away.

I'll have to look into that some more, though it's really hard to catch it happening since the timing between the logout and when WoW starts claiming you're no longer in a guild is very tight.

Try 4.1b3 if you haven't already -- that has some code to detect the dropped guild stuff and suppress doing the guild data channel commands which generate that message. Don't know if it'll matter, but it'd be nice to know.

  • July 23, 2008, 12:53PM (3 days, 11 hours ago)

I downloaded 4.1b4 yesterday, are you suggesting i downgrade to 4.1b3?

  • July 23, 2008, 04:57PM (3 days, 7 hours ago)

No, I just brain-farted and mentioned 4.1b3. I guess I've been saying 4.1b3 for so long now that it's become habit. I meant for you to try the current 4.1 beta, which is 4.1b4.

  • July 24, 2008, 10:09PM (2 days, 2 hours ago)

The "you are not in a guild" when exiting takes place with or w/o GC enabled so I dont think it has anyting to do with GC
