Wrath Pre-Launch World Event

Posted Oct 23, 2008 by Kody

UPDATE #2: Screenshots added as well as initial info on playing as a zombie.
UPDATE: We have information on how to become infected.  The source is from Booty Bay -- click for more details.

It appears the pre-launch World Event for Wrath of the Lich King is now active on all US and EU servers! (Unknown if active on Korean and Chinese servers)

What is known right now is that it seems to be phase 1, which is a zombie invasion.  Players can become infected by Conspicuous Crates (or other zombies), and the Argent Dawn has dispatched agents across Azeroth and Outland to help combat the threat.  You can find them stationed at Argent Dawn banners.

If the disease isn't cured by either a player or an Argent Healer, you're transformed into a zombie and can attack other players -- infecting them in the process.   While transformed, you gain access to special abilities only available while zombiefied, and you're also friendly to other zombies.

We're working on getting more screenshots now, and will continue to provide updates as we learn more about the event and the phases that unfold.

How to become infected

  • Travel to Booty Bay and right-click a Conspicuous Crate.  This will infect you and open up a window with some flavor text.  After 10 minutes you will transform into a Plague Zombie -- which uses the new vehicle system -- and unlocks special zombie skillsDying to an NPC or player while infected, or using immunity abilities such as Divine Shield will instantly transform you.
  • Caution, NPCs can become infected too, and they will transform into a ghoul of the same level.  This is especially dangerous for areas with guards higher level than the content, such as Booty Bay, the cities, etc.
  • While infected, even going near an Argent Healer will cause them to cure you.  If you want to play around as a zombie, use caution and don't approach them.
  • From all accounts thus far, you become a zombie of your level, so low level players will have lower health and overall stats as a zombie than level 70 players.

Playing as a zombie

  • While a zombie you unlock special abilities only available in this form.
  • Your zombie transformation has no set duration, but you are under the effect of a constant DoT that will kill you if you do not feed.
  • You must attack other players or NPCs to feed; doing this will proc "Bite" which heals you.
  • Your zombie stats are not dependant on your items at all, so you can unequip them to avoid durability loss.
  • Dying to other players does not cause you to lose durability, but dying to NPCs will cause durability loss.
  • It appears that you can only infect humanoids, and possibly only humanoids who are KoS to you while a zombie.
  • You are only able to attack players of your faction.  (Maybe a bug?)
    • This appears to only be an issue in Shattrath City.  I was able to attack Horde players in other areas.  Shattrath is being really weird about who you can attack in zombie form (and what zombies you can attack).

Blizzard attracts some of the most immature players (wont call them gamers). Blizzard devs themselves are immature because you can never hold a dialogue with them. I cant even imagine who actually plays their betas. Groupies? This was a boring and tedious opener. I cringe at the thought of what's coming next.

While i feel the event is a good thing, some of the people actually taking part of it, need too look in a mirror at themselves, As some people are really going out of there way too make gameplay horrid, i mean going too low lvl areas and infecting guards and such that are above the level of the ppl questing there is just really, really lame.

Aside from the infected roaches in the main cities, there are now more crates everywhere as well. Some Argent Healers seem to be removed and some non-healing Argent Dawn NPCs have spawned inside the cities. There is now a low level quest (around lvl 10) available at the entrance to the main cities where you have to kill scourge mobs (much like the Shadow of the Necropolis event I think). And at least Undercity got attacked by a rather large group of lvl 63 elite scourge mobs tonight. There are also lvl 10 zombies (capable of infecting you) spawning right outside Undercity.

For those who still haven't figured out how to use the special abilities: Look at your action bar while in zombie form. It will change to only give you the new abilities. This action bar swapping is a new concept, and the event is a good way to get used to it.

I wish people would whine less; this is an awsome event! I don't want some watered-down nilly-willy event where it feels like nothing is happening and there's no threat, that takes the fun out of it! I know a lot of people like to just play without anything ever changing, but this adds a real feeling of "something's invading." Blizzard has my kudos!

I'm in agreement with Latrocinor on this, but would like to add that the problem is less with the event itself than with how people are behaving.

Stage 2 has begun I believe. There are now quite a few infected Roach critters in all major cities, im not sure if they are all over the worlds, but I saw them in IF, SW. Highly likely they're spawning in others as well.

i still haven't figured out how to use the special abilities, nothing pops up on the screen and nothing is in my spell book. The screen does get a nice red tint to it.

Most major cities now have the boxes in them, as well as infected cockroaches. If you attack the roaches, they AoE the plague clouds. Also it is now harder to be cured of the plaque by players, taking multiple attempts.

It seems fun for some people but it resembles the situation on a PVP server. It interferes with normal game-play of those who DO NOT want to be on a PVP server.

vthompson: There are Argent Healers stationed all over the place -- and should definitely appear near flight masters -- so simply run into range of them and get a cure. Zombies that go near the Argent Healers are pretty much instantly killed.

I really think this event sucks. I have been zombiefied at the stupidest of times. It is impossible to avoid getting zombiefied when they attack and fight around the flightmaster and you fly in. There needs to be a way to opt out of this. It is a nice idea and if there was a way to not get involved it would be better.

I like how the planned this... Hallow's Eve celebrates Sylvanas' and the Forsaken getting out of the influence of the Lich King.

i agree, its stupid that they are killing battleground npc. but, if it is an actual player doing it, you can report them for it. because it is interfering with your gameplay. ^_~ and thats not allowed.

Great idea but allowing the battle masters to get infected is absolutely asinine. Not everyone wants to participate in this. Why grieve them if they don't by ruining their game time? 2/10

Brilliant of Bliz to do a Zombie thing during Hallows Eve. I recalled something in the back of my mind about the Argent Crusade or somesuch being a new faction in WOTLK, but didn't quite connect that this was WOTLK-related. I'm going to have to go try this one out.

I was wondering what this was. I was rep grinding some at CT in the Barrens and was attacked by zombies. Thought it was some undisclosed Halloween thing or something...
